closed This allows coolant to circulate through the engine by way of a bypass canal located directly below the thermostat As the engine warms up the thermostat begins to open allowing coolant to pass through to the radiator At the same time a lower poppet or bypass valve moves down to block the bypass canal When the thermostat is fully open the bypass is fully blocked circulating all coolant through the radiator GM Bracket Thermostat This unique design thermostat is enclosed in a thermostat housing attached to the engine A Stant 10232 thermostat housing cap is located on top of the housing for easy access and quick replacement Installation Instructions For GM Bracket Design Thermostats Caution Failure to comply with these instructions may result in serious injury 1 Allow cooling system to cool before servicing 2 Prevent accidental starting of the engine by removing the ignition key 3 Do not attempt to remove the thermostat housing cap when engine is hot 4 After the engine cools turn the thermostat housing cap slowly counter clockwise to remove If there is any indication of pressure stop immediately 5 Remove the thermostat by grasping the thermostat strap and pulling upward 6 Before installation of the new thermostat make sure the thermostat sealing seat in the housing is clean and free of any solid material which will cause leakage Recheck coolant level and add if necessary 7 To install the new thermostat lower the thermostat into the housing using the thermostat strap as a handle Make sure that you place the thermostat down into the housing seating the thermostat No excessive force is needed 8 Replace the thermostat housing cap by turning clockwise If the cap fails to seal the filler neck and leaks coolant replace the cap FROM ENGINE TO RADIATOR OPENED THERMOSTAT CLOSED THERMOSTAT OPENED THERMOSTAT 294 REMOVAL 1 Cool engine then drain coolant from the radiator and engine drain plug located at the right front of engine 2 Disconnect lower radiator hose at thermostat housing 3 Remove two bolts in water inlet housing 4 Remove water inlet housing and thermostat assembly 5 Remove the O ring from the water inlet housing THE O RING MUST BE REPLACED WHENEVER THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING IS REMOVED 6 Remove the thermostat assembly using the tube provided in the kit Place the tube over the bypass disc and while pressing down on the frame Rotate the tube to remove the thermostat assembly Inspect the inlet water housing for any damage INSTALLATION 1 Install the thermostat assembly into the water inlet housing using the tube provided in the kit Push down on the frame and rotate the tube to seat the frame into the slots in the inlet water housing MAKE SURE THE THERMOSTAT ASSEMBLY RETAINING FRAMES ARE PROPERLY SEATED IN THE HOUSING AND THE PISTON OF THE THERMOSTAT ASSEMBLY IS PROPERLY POSITIONED IN THE WATER INLET HOUSING 2 Install a new O ring into the inlet housing 3 Install the inlet water housing into the block 4 Install the bolts and tighten 5 Re install the cylinder block drain plug and close the radiator drain plug 6 Connect the lower radiator hose to the inlet housing MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS ON LEVEL GROUND WHEN FILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM 7 Refill the system with coolant 8 Start the engine and run engine with heater on until the thermostat opens Refill system replace the radiator cap and fill the coolant surge tank
