AIRTEX Technical Service Bulletin Truck Bed Removal to Access the Fuel Pump The Problem The in tank fuel pump assembly on many light truck models is accessible either by dropping the fuel tank from undernea th the vehicle or by removing the truck bed Typically removing the truck bed enables better access to the fuel pump assembly but failure to remove and or re attach the ground wire and fuel ller neck hose often results in installation problems that may be misdiagnosed as a pump issue The Solution 1 Remove the bolts from the truck frame 2 Locate all of the taillight wiring and disconnect all wiring connections 3 Disconnect the ground wire screwed onto the frame You may have to reconnect that ground wire for the truck to start with the bed off 4 Open the gas cap and unbolt the ller neck from the bed TM 6810 TSB 0510b indd 1 6810 TSB 0510b indd 1 2 3 11 4 37 PM 2 3 11 4 37 PM 407 West Main Street Fair eld IL 62837 Tech Line 1 800 424 7839 2011 Airtex Products LP airtexproducts com AIRTEX Technical Service Bulletin TSB 0510 01_ATX Truck Bed Removal to Access the Fuel Pump Required Tools Ratc Wrenches Screwdrivers Torx head sockets 1 or 2 assistants and or approved lifting device Open the gas door unbolt the ller neck and push the nozzle inside the bed so it s out of the way Remove taillight wiring from taillights This may involve removing the taillights Ensure that wiring is out of the way of the bed and not bound between the bed and frame Check underneath the bed by the tailgate and make sure no wiring is connected to the bottom of the bed If there is undo wiring and place it to the side Unbolt the bed from the frame Typically there are six to eight bolts holding the bed in place spaced evenly among the frame and easily accessible Lift the bed up and off the back of the truck being careful not to hit the gas nozzle or the tires Install new fuel pump according to manufacturer instructions Refer to appropriate repair manual You may have to reconnect that ground wire for the truck to start with the bed off Reinstall truck bed ensuring that all vehicle wiring is properly replaced and all grounds secured IMPORTANT Reattach all ground wires removed If testing the fuel pump prior to replacing the truck bed be sure that fuel pump ground wire is secured so new fuel pump will operate properly TM 6810 TSB 0510b indd 2 6810 TSB 0510b indd 2 2 3 11 4 37 PM 2 3 11 4 37 PM
