Thank you for purchasing this Dorman 425 176 Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft We have been receiving lots of great feedback on the Intermediate Steering Shaft products We ve also had some questions from the field about the proper orientation and installation of this part All the vehicles this part fits use a 2 piece steering shaft assembly This part is the Upper Intermediate Shaft However when you look in the engine bay the Lower shaft is the part that is clearly visible That s because the Upper shaft actually passes through the firewall and connects to the bottom of the steering column inside the vehicle under the dashboard Some installers may mistake the end of the shaft for the end of the steering column because the boot covers the upper portion of it Upper Shaft and Boot Bolted Joint Lower Shaft Connection to steering box or rack and pinion When performing the installation disconnect the Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft using the procedure outlined in the vehicle service manual It s important to make sure the steering wheel is locked and the vehicle s tires are not allowed to turn during removal and installation The upper and lower shaft may be difficult to put together due to the lower shaft tube being pinched or crushed in This condition comes from repeated assembly and disassembly to lubricate the Original Equipment Upper Steering Shaft If this is the case the inside of the lower shaft should be resized for proper fit or it should be replaced Be sure to tighten the steering shaft bolts to the specified torque using hand tools to prevent further damage to the lower steering shaft connection 2800046
